The City of Golden Valley has gone so far as to intervene in the
lawsuit on the side of General Mills, they see this as good deal for them.
They get a 27 acre nature park, 4 acres of ballfields, and park development
money - all for free. Golden Valley municipal water comes from Minneapolis,
so they don't have to worry about ground water. The fact that the City of
Golden Valley continues to tolerate a section of Bassett Creek to be
officially classified as "county ditch", makes me question their concern for
water quality in the creek. The one and only section of 'county ditch' in
the main branch of the creek just happens to be the portion that receives
the General Mills discharge.
It would be great if the City of Minneapolis would weigh in and submit a
comment of concern about this issue. I encourage people and organizations to
do so. However, I do not know if enough research information is on record at
this point to say definitively if the General Mills discharge in fact does
or does not harm aquatic life in the creek.
