Thanks to David and Mike Horvath. I've been chomping at the bit since Thursday to post this. In my opinion, some high (or maybe low) points of Thursday's hearing to reappoint police chief Robert Olson: * The Hennepin County sheriff talked about what a great chief Olson was. The sheriff is entitled to his opinion of course, but it suggests his agency isn't exactly impartial in investigating the deaths of Barbara Schnieder and Alfred Sanders. * A young woman who had been involved in the Highway 55 protest described being held down as pepper spray was squirted into her eyes at short range. Amnesty International has a name for this sort of treatment. I never thought I'd be hearing about it in Minneapolis. * The "gun-shop guy." I think this is the pro-police guy who generates the anti-Kathleen Soliah/Sara Jane Olson bumper stickers. He was hard to understand, but he seemed to be saying that the time police were required to spend on the shooting range had been drastically curtailed. I wonder if someone who carries a firearm but is not comfortable with it or accustomed to its use might be more rather than less likely to use it in a moment of indecision. * Brian Herron said, "All these people didn't show up just because they didn't have anything better to do this afternoon." I hope he shares that thought with the mayor.
