Rich apparently doesn't believe me. In my work, I quite often traverse the entire metro area. For years I have commuted to Minneapolis and St. Paul -- working downtown and then for the Mpls Public Housing Authortiy. I like Mpls, my family roots are there, I have numeous business relations there, and I know the city well. I'll be living downtown after my last daughter is out the door. My wife and I have lived and worked in other large cities, like Washington DC and Denver. My point about my commute is just that -- I'm not bitching. It would be nice if the drive were still only 30 to 40 minutes, but 40 to 50 is not onerous. The point of my previous posting had nothing to do with my drive time, or if I like or dislike of Mpls or urban living. You can solve congestion far more easily, with less brain damage, and with less public dollars than with rail. My posting had a few ideas -- some that are being enacted around the world in very vibrant, progressive, and growing cities. Unfortunately Rich, history is not on the side of rail. Am I being too optimistic?? Probably. I recommend living in Minneapolis (or Saint Paul), and commuting the other direction. Then you won't have to whine about the long commute from Hastings. There is a nice new 3 bedroom house down the street from me and another one being built right behind it on Portland. Not exactly affordable housing for many who already live around here but probably less than a home in Hastings. And garrages big enough to hold the Suburban, a Toyota and that Honda Gold Wing you always wanted. Right on the 9 and 23 bus lines too...
