Although I'm a city employee - Dept. of Health and Family Support - I'm writing as a resident: The idea of wine sales in grocery stores is a bad idea from a public health perspective. Dozens of studies have linked increased alcohol availability (more places to buy alcohol, and more availability of strong alcohol) with increased consumption and alcohol-related problems (motor vehicle crashes, violent crimes, hospital admission, etc.). Having said this, I'm willing to put up with the inconvenience of not having wine available in grocery stores in order to protect the city from the potential negative impacts on neighborhood livability.
