Thanks Scott for bringing some civility to this dialogue. I have not
participated because I didn't participate in the protests and I have my own
problems on police issues between the city and park board who are in
negotiations as we speak about services - integrating or not integrating???
But that aside I have read the messages and am extremely offended by the
bashing, especially the specific bashing post of DS. I have been a
protestor for over 30 years and tried to change this system and have yelled
my share of angry words. Now that I am on the "inside" (whatever that
means since I don't really believe I'm on the inside as I sit in a minority
coalition) as an elected officeholder and have 25 years under my belt of
community organizing - the yelling and screaming just doesn't get it - folks!
Scott's idea of participating at your Precinct Advisory Councils and
working with your neighborhood group to research and start a community
policing program or justice project seems to be appropriate.
I've also noticed that some of those yelling hardest on this issue don't
live in Minneapolis. Not that I mind you participating in the dialogue
about our Mpls Issues but if you're going to bash and beat up our cops do
it in your own hometown to your cops.
If they do read this list I ask them to participate with the local groups
as well. I think that most us want to try to figure out how to solve the
problem with peace, civility, negotiation and positive solutions. Verbal
bashing is not much different than physical bashing - ask an abused wife.
