A note of caution.
Amtrak and any number of other federal transportation figures for the past
few years have been pushing through legislation that creates what amounts
to linear TIF districts along these corridors -- including massive
subsidies to the most despicably fouled up train operation in the world --
Amtrak.
The designation opens the door for grants and other gifts from the feds,
essentially a self promotional endeavor paid for by the yokels in the
hinterlands. Now that the $10 million plus annual operating shortfall has
been publicized for Hiawatha, what do you suspect would be the annual
operating subsidy for something as grand as HS rail corridors?
Keep digging Richard. The more folks that find out the bottom line with
any federally funded transit scheme the better off we all are.
Incidentally, any guesses as to which joint house / senate subcommittee is
the largest in history in terms of membership -- which begets pork of
unbelievable proportions??
