Greg Riedesel brings up valid and legitimate concerns regarding the
intersection of campaign finance disclosures and personal privacy. It
is unfortunate, that in our desire to clean up and open up campaign
financing, we may end up with more junk mail.
It seems to me that part of the problem has to do with ownership of
personal data. As it now stands, the organization that collected the
data has sole ownership. These organizations may use the data as they
see fit, regardless of our desires for privacy. I find this offensive,
because, when I make a contribution to a candidate, I am not giving
them or anyone the right to use my name or personal information for
whatever purpose they see fit.
I do not believe this privacy and data ownership issue can be resolved
at the local level or even at the state level. However, if individuals
had sole ownership or co-ownership of personal data, then Greg R.
probably would not need to be concerned that his contribution to a
Green party candidate will place him on the Sierra Club's mailing
list.
