I'm glad to hear that Brian Herron was full of passion at the breakfast
meeting the other day. I believe Herron to be an honorable and decent man;
that certainly has been the case in my dealings with him on stories I have
written that benefit from his input.
But I have also seen Herron be overly cautious, to the point of timidity,
when confronting some of the policies set forth by the Mayor, particularly
with respect to the shenanigans surrounding the police, fire and civil rights
departments.
To choose a germane example, if Herron was so fired up over the ISAG
overreactions by the police, why did it seem that it was his colleague Jim
Niland, and not Herron or Niland/Herron, who took the lead in officially
protesting the actions of the MPD?
While I'm glad Herron challenged Nader to get beyond the overwhelmingly white
coterie that currently constitutes the Greens, I would be more heartened to
see him exercise the bully pulpit and expend political capital more often in
places where he actually has a chance to directly influence the lives of the
people he represents.
