Still traveling, I read an interesting article in
today's Denver Post about Light Rail funding:

The proposal out here is to bring private money into
the funding formula.  The private money sources would
then get development rights to property along the rail
route near the line's stations.

Sounds like a win-win situation, part of the cost of
public transportation is paid by the private sector
and the tax base is increased by the development. 
Development that doesn't require a public subsidy.
