David Brauer, list manager]

I'm sorry I haven't been posting regularly to this
list, but I'm not online much these days as the Ward 9
DFL endorsing convention is eight days away. (March 3
at 9:30 for those of you who may be delegates.)

(As I write this, I remember that Oscar Wilde once
said that "the only thing worse than being talked
about is NOT being talked about.")

I'm running for Minneapolis City Council because I
believe in the city, and I want to continue to serve
our neighborhoods. I want to bring my urban planning
experience to City Hall.

I've been running a strong, positive campaign, and it
shows. More and more delegates are declaring their
support for my candidacy. Delegates are saying that
they are tired of the negative campaigning of groups
like Progressive Minnesota, which is phoning delegates
on behalf of my opponent. To Progressive Minnesota,
if someone they disagree with endorses me, I become
the enemy. This is their thinking even though I am a
former staff member and board member of that
organization.

First they attacked me for being too liberal, because
I admit voting for Nader, now I'm being attacked for
being too conservative, because Jackie Cherryhomes
offered her support. It's unfortunate that I have to
engage that negativity here.

Jackie Cherryhomes offered her support of my campaign
in recognition of my work, and despite our different
ideas about downtown development. It was not an
endorsement, and I should have NOT have said that she
had endorsed me.

My campaign has been focusing on my unique
experiences:

I co-authored the 1997 Minneapolis Charter Amendment
that limits the amount of money the city can put into
a new professional sports stadium.

I have consistently opposed using TIF to fund downtown
retail operations like the new Target store, and I
will continue to do so.

I am the only candidate in the race that has been
endorsed by Labor: the United Steelworkers of America
Local #12106 endorsed me last week.

I have also been endorsed by Brian Herron, Cara
Letofsky, Dick Westby, Dave Mann, Dean Zimmermann, and
many others.

The variety of people supporting my candidacy shows
that they trust me to represent the Ninth Ward in City
Hall. (See my web site for a more complete list of
endorsements.) My record shows that I am the kind of
person who can build coalitions and get things done in
Minneapolis.

I look forward to a debate on the issues and not
attacks on whom I supported or who supports me.

Thank you.

Gary Schiff
