"Jackie Cherryhomes offered her support of my campaign
in recognition of my work, and despite our different ideas about downtown development. It was not an endorsement, and I should have NOT have said that she had endorsed me." Regarding the Ward 9 campaign, I was a little surprised how an
issue like this could be so easily swept under the carpet. I have two
thoughts:
1) We all know there is a major difference between
receiving someone's "support" and receiving their "endorsement." A slip of
the tongue may be understandable, depending on the circumstances and
surroundings of where the statement was made. However, during any
type of campaign event or a crucial meeting like an endorsement screening, the
presumption is that the candidate chooses his precise words, and should be
held accountable for them. To say the wrong word at the
wrong time creates the presumption that the slip was
intentional.
2) The above statement begs the question: what
assurances were made to Jackie Cherryhomes by Gary Schiff in order to attain her
support? Jackie is a seasoned political veteran who would not simply give
her support away. She would want an agreement from Gary Schiff that he
supports her on stadium development, or perhaps her continued position as City
Council President. We may not have the right to know what was discussed
behind closed doors, but we certainly have the right to wonder.
