Actually at the Emergency Citizen Advisory Council meeting held last week
to address issues of the Retaining wall at Hiawatha and Lake it was
mentioned in passing about getting the electric buses and I believe Carol
Cummer stated that Metro Transit was going to start integrating some into
the system. Further details would be great. During the Hiawatha Lake
Charrette I proposed a Transportation Institute to be located at this
heavily traffic ridden intersection that would study and research all kinds
of transportation alternatives and opportunities. The school would look at
electric buses, manufacturing them, job training programs and deal with the
connection to transportation issues ( I stole this idea from Chattanooga,
Tennessee (once the most polluted city in America now replaced by Houston).
I know that in New York City and Philadephia there are also Taxicab
companies that are using alternative cleaner fueled vehicles. We gotta
start somewhere soon - like yesterday. Or smog is getting really bad. Most
people on this list may not notice it but drive North in to downtown on 35W
many days it's pretty hazy.
I've lived in LA and Denver and do know about smog and what it does to
people's lungs.

Hope somebody can answer us as to Metro Transit's plan to cleaner vehicles.
Just for folks information we are making the conversion on Park Board
vehicles to natural gas, slow but sure - it takes a long time to make these
conversions dependent on your replacement schedules and access to the funds
to purchase the newer models.
