With all due respect to Phyllis Kahn, An election is a choice people
make based on their political viewpoints and convictions. There were enough
people in Minneapolis, and in the country who felt that Gore did not
represent them. Gore was pro death penalty, Nader was against it. Gore was
a NAFTA supporter, Nader was not. These are only two examples but in many
ways, Nader was far more consistent with the DFL platform than was Gore. I
think holding people in contempt because of their personal or even political
convictions is wrong. I do think you can disagree with their viewpoint, but
many DFLers and even some Republicans supported Ralph Nader because of what
he stood for. Anyone's choice in who they vote for is a personal choice,
based on their conscience and must be respected.
I am also running for city council in the sixth ward, and the same
arguments that have been used against Nader have been used against me.
Never the less, like Ralph Nader, my goal is to get my message out to as
many people as possible and if it resonates, then I'll win. Finally, Gore
won the election in Minnesota and probably across the country including
Florida despite the Nader movement or the closeness of the election. I
think it's a huge stretch to accuse Annie Young or Dean Zimmermann for
electing Bush. It's worth remembering that many people in 1998 believed
that Jesse Ventura would swing the vote to Norm Coleman. We all know what
happened.

>Other election/endorsement note: I see that two usual contributors to this
list, Annie Young and Dean Zimmerman have both announced their election
bids. Unless I missed it, they did not say they were asking for DFL
endorsement. I certainly hope that they are honorable enough to not ask for
it or that the DFL delegates are sensible enough not to give it to either of
them. As leaders in the Nader movement in MN, they bear some responsibility
for the election of our current president and should not be forgiven
easily. They may deserve to be elected but it should be without the help of
the party they trashed.
