The recent posts about buses and pollution reminded me of this article in the Tues. 2/27 Science section of the NY Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/27/health/27PATT.html When driving in Atlanta was strictly limited during the 1996 Summer Olympics (to ensure visitors could get to the events) an unintended result was a decrease in serious episodes of asthma among children. "Medicaid claims for asthma-related emergency care visits and hospitalizations decreased about 40 percent, for example. Among H.M.O. patients, visits dropped by about 44 percent. And two large pediatric emergency departments reported a decrease of about 11 percent."
