In today's StarTribune is an article titled "Council endorses stadium
study, establishes working group", which can be found at
http://www.startribune.com/viewers/qview/cgi/qview.cgi?template=sports_a_cache&slug=stad03

While reading the article, I was dismayed to read that, when Jim
Niland wished to make it clear that the stadium must be completely
privately funded, Paul Ostrow and Jackie Cherryhomes accused him of
politicizing the issue. First off, of course it is a political issue!
Any action the City Council takes is a political issue! Ostrow and
Cherryhomes are as guilty of politicizing the issue as is Niland.
Secondly, I am not convinced that spending any money on the stadium
issue is a wise use of money when I believe that the basic
infrastructure of this city, such as street maintainance and garbage
clean up, need to be improved and the issue of affordable housing
needs to be addressed. Also, considering how Mayor Sayles Belton
wishes to cut city services and raise taxes at the same time, it would
be good for the city to put its foot down and say "We will not spend a
dime on a ballpark until we get our financial situation in order."

I commend Jim Niland for his efforts to protect the city taxpayers and
I commend Lisa McDonald and Lisa Goodman for supporting him. As for
the Mayor and the rest of the City Council, you are welcome to spend
your own money, but please do not spend my tax dollars on a ballpark
for the Twins.
