I would like to wade into this discussion of who voted for what with a
short story told by the Senator Spear that I heard at a 60th district
convention some years ago. During the endorsement questioning someone
had posed a scathing question, laced with derision, about a particular
vote cast by Allan. Allan explained that the bill in question had been
so badly amended that it bore no resemblance to the original. He went on
to describe how the amended version would have been inimical to the
interests of the questioner's purposes. So what is the lesson? I
contend that you just can not look barefaced at a few word issue and
vote. You need to dig into the detail, if you seek understanding. Now I
know this is very hard work but perform it you must.
