FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CAM GORDON ENDORSED BY GREEN PARTY:
MINNEAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL RACE GROWS STRONGER
SATURDAY 3/03/01 4:00 PM (CST)
MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis Green Party endorsed Cameron Gordon for City
Council in Ward 2 this afternoon with an enthusiastic show of support.
A founding member of the Green Party of Minnesota, Gordon is seeking election to
the Minneapolis City Council "to bring leadership to the city, creative new
solutions to its problems and active responsive representation for the people of
the second ward," he said.
Gordon believes that his active background in community involvement, education,
music, child care and small business ownership give him the skills and breadth
of knowledge to understand and find solutions for the concerns facing the city
today.
"I hope to bring the hopes and concerns of my neighbors and the values,
principles and platform of the Greens to Minneapolis city government," he said.
"My commitment is to run the most thoughtful, inclusive and open campaign
possible. Through it, I will demonstrate the kind of active, responsive
representation I can offer the citizens of the second ward."
Gordon's neighborhood experience includes serving on the Seward
Neighborhood Group board of directors for five out of the last six years, two
years as co-chair, as well as a board position with the Minneapolis Center for
Neighborhoods, which works with all Minneapolis Neighborhood organizations. He
has been actively involved in the Seward neighborhood with the Neighborhood
Revitalization Program, a city program that empowers local neighborhoods with
funding and decision-making authority.
Gordon supports the "four pillars" of the Green Party: ecological wisdom, social
and economic justice, grassroots democracy and nonviolence. Local issues he will
raise in his campaign include affordable housing, livable wages, workers'
rights, community-oriented policing, cleaner air and water, and stronger,
healthier neighborhoods.
"We have a real housing crisis in Minneapolis," he said. "The city must take
measures to maintain and increase the number of affordable housing units in the
city. I support the recommendations of the city's Affordable Housing Task Force
report. I also think that it is time to renew the public discussion about rent
control."
In 1996 Gordon was the first candidate ever endorsed by the Green Party of
Minnesota when he ran for State Representative in District 62A. In that
three-way race, he came in second with nearly 25% of the vote.
Gordon is optimistic about his 2001 campaign for City Council. "In the months
ahead I will be meeting with, listening to and sharing ideas with people
throughout the ward," he said. "I know that the best ideas for our city and the
best solutions to its problems will come, not from me alone and not from city
hall, but from the meaningful public discourse of all concerned citizens. It is
the individual people and the neighborhoods, after all, who represent the city's
greatest strengths and best hope."
Gordon is an accomplished Montessori educator and the author of Together with
Montessori. He currently operates a child care program out of his home serving
several Minneapolis families. Gordon lives with his family near Riverside Park
in Seward.
