[Forwarded at the request of DFL Green caucus chair Leo Cashman. Part of a continuing series of questionnaires, endorsements, and party communications found on the Minneapolis-Issues Election Toolkit, http://www.e-democracy.org/mpls/toolkit.htm. (Note: no mayoral candidate has sent me any filled-out DFL Green caucus questionnaires to post on the Toolkit page, including endorsee Rybak. I'd love to post candidates' answers so voters can read for themselves.) -- David Brauer, list manager] DFL GREEN CAUCUS ENDORSES RYBAK March 7th 2001 The DFL Green Caucus has recently endorsed R. T. Rybak for Mayor of Minneapolis. Rybak, best known as the head of ROAR, a citizens group opposed to airport noise, has launched a campaign to challenge incumbent mayor Sharon Sayles Belton in the fall elections. This is Rybak's first run for elective office. "People are ready for a change and for a clearer vision and real leadership," said Leo Cashman, chair of the caucus. "People are also looking for someone rooted in the community and who can balance the needs of downtown interests with real neighborhood values; we feel that R. T. Rybak is such a person. We hope that people in Minneapolis will take a good look at his candidacy, his positions on issues. We think that they will like what they see. ... We trust R. T. to bring in a breath of fresh air and independence into city hall and to give us the quality of forward-looking city government that we need. We it comes to protecting our lakes, our water and our air, R.T. 'gets it.'" The caucus also made endorsements in three key ward races: In the 11th ward, now represented by Dore Mead, the caucus endorsed Scott Benson. In the 6th ward, where Jim Niland, an outstanding progressive, is stepping down, the caucus endorsed Dean Zimmerman. Zimmerman, who was a founder of the Green Caucus in 1994, has served on the Minneapolis Park board with high distinction. In the 13th ward, the caucus endorsed Greg Abbott, who is a well respected attorney and environmental leader. Abbott is challenging 13th ward Barret Lane, who is seeking a second term. The DFL Green Caucus has also made some endorsements for Minneapolis Park Board; it endorsed Marie Hauser for the 3rd Park Board District seat being vacated by Dean Zimmerman. And it endorsed Annie Young and Rochelle Berry Graves for re-election to their at-large positions on the park board.
