Hi Folks:

Interesting that this comes down the email shoot--just as I'm writing
Sayles Belton a letter which I have attached.

You know Mark, sure there is hyperbole and empty rhetoric on the
Minneapolis Issues list--but it's alot more substantive, and related to our
daily lives in the city that I hear when I tune in to listen to the talking
heads on Crossfire or Hardball, or when I hear political ads designed by
political consultants--whose jobs often seems to be to keep the candidate
from direct interaction with the voters. However one thing we have here on
Minneapolis Issues, that we don't have with political advertising, is that
one doesn't need big money to write the script and participate--all it
takes is an email address and the time it takes to write a rant.....

If you don't like what is on the threads, then post a new thread. Post
something about why you support the Mayor perhaps. The quality of this
list is the responsibility of the list participants.

I would encourage others to write the Mayor and your city council members
to encourage them to join the list if they are not already subscribed. I'd
also urge the Mayor and City Council members to use this list as a way to
communicate and test ideas. In alot of ways, this forum can be a good free
initial focus group. And also, invite your friends and neighbors to join
in with us.

Dear Mayor Sayles Belton:

Thank you for having the forum at the Chatterbox last night. I was the
person who asked you about whether you were going to attend candidate
forums before the City DFL convention. I would challenge you to
participate in scheduling one. The Rose Garden strategy for a campaign
isn't the right one for the City of Minneapolis, where the citizens expect
their candidates to mix it up with the noble freethinking citizens.

I would like to urge you to write the list and tell your side of the
story. Both your opponents participate on this list. I find the list a
useful way to connect with my elected officials, and I have started to use
participation in online forums such as this as part of the basis for my
vote.

I find forums such as these a valuable way to find out about candidates.
When candidates participate I can get some insight into the way they
interact with people and think on their feet. It also helps me to compare
different candidates.

Is there inaccurate stuff on Minneapolis Issues? Sure there is. There
are also inaccurate stories in the newspaper, and passed around by word of
mouth. The advantage of Minneapolis Issues is that fellow list members
will keep people honest. It is embarrassing to get a story wrong. It
isn't a way to build respect among others on the list.

I'd like to urge you to participate and listen in on the Minneapolis
Issues forum. I think this is an investment well worth your time and
effort. The forum has been successful in bringing people together within
the city to work together on common goals.
