Those of you that follow the national news may have noted
that the Postal Service is now predicting a loss of two to three
billion dollars this fiscal year. Postal Management of course sees
this as an opportunity for some "pruning" and is sharpening their
long knives. Minneapolis has several neighborhood Post Offices whose
loading docks can not accommodate a large "semi" truck. To serve
these stations the Postal Service has a number of more maneuverable
medium size trucks. These trucks were due for replacement this year,
but that purchase has now reportedly been cancelled. Rather, the
Postal Service has been removing their identification from several of
these trucks and parking them. This suggests that these trucks will
soon be sold off.
The Postal Service can still serve these neighborhood
stations without a couple of these trucks, although given their age
it would be useful to have some spares. However, as more of these
trucks are pulled from service the closure of some neighborhood Post
Offices seems inevitable... perhaps this is the Postal Service's
plan? If you have concerns about these possible closures you might
want to express them to Postmaster General William J. Henderson, U.S.
Postal Service, 475 L'Enfant Plaza Southwest, Washington DC 20260.
