Exempt employees are exempt from the requirement to be paid overtime for
hours worked in excess of 40 per week (and certain other issues).

An employer can choose to not compensate in any manner for time over 40,
to compensate with some time off, or to pay for such time.

My current employer does not pay for it and only gives comp time off for
sustained efforts involving significant overtime. A previous employer
paid straight time for hours worked over 45 per week. When I worked for
a small college, there was neither.
