46th would be a nightmare. That street already carries much more traffic
than 35th or 36th, and planners insist it would fail with several thousand
extra cars shunted down there. You'd have to bust out dozens of homes and
widen the road to even make a go of it. >>
Obviously we don't want to move several thousand extra cars down to 46th
Street - the plan would be unworkable if it didn't include alternative
transportation. We need to find ways to reduce auto traffic all around,
and/or restrict it to existing corridors, which could include expanding the
frontage roads bordering I35W, so that cars exiting on 46th could take an
unobtrusive north/south route to get to their neighborhood feeder streets
(42nd, 38th, 36th etc.)

<< Baloney! The traffic is not naturally calmed on either 35th or 36th
streets.
People barrel through there like their pants are on fire. Ask the people on
the
corners who, many of them, have give up replacing their fences. These two
streets
were changed so that the traffic can "shoot straight through" Central. Then
they
return to a more natural stae once they hit Powderhorn.I'm not impressed with
the
dunce-cap engineering that went into creating this mess.

Of course it's not good. But it could be worse - look at what happened to
26th when they made it a through street.
Regarding 40th Street - it is being considered for a future "greenway",
because of its proximity to several parks and the existing footbridge across
I35W. Please let's not route all the freeway traffic onto 40th Street!
We just can't have it both ways - the convenience of car culture AND
peaceful, healthy pedestrian neighborhoods. At some point we have to develop
both the personal and political will to change our transportation habits.
