I am surprised that there is not much follow up discussion about the
city council's 7-6 decision to sell Ryan Construction riverfront land
next the Guthrie theater site for $8 per sqaure foot, to build an office
for a public relations firm with a parking lot contrary to a recent city
ordinace.
The only explanation that I have heard for this latest virtual corporate
giveaway is to keep Padilla Spears in town. if that is the only
explanation, i don't think it will be sufficient to any voters paying
attention to this deal. there are obviously many businesses that the
city officials would like to keep in town. that doesn't mean they get
waterfront land without any competitive bidding, next to a major
cultural attraction, and in disregard of parking policies recently
adopted.
For those who supported the deal, are there any other explanations?
For those who opposed the deal, is there any analysis as to what
motivated the majority of the city council to vote in favor?
It is also notable that Ryan's projects seem to keep getting spectacular
backing from the city. (ie the $128 million TIF subsidy for the Target
site and now the Padilla Spears project). Do any "insiders" have
explanations about why Ryan keeps getting this great treatment?
