We have heard much sturm and drag from the candidates
recently about the housing crisis, and they now seemed to be agreed
at least that it is indeed a crisis. What we have yet to hear is a
lot of solutions. So let me throw out a few modest proposals for
comment, especially from the candidates...

RVs- My mom winters in Florida in manufactured housing, and
spends the summer in her 27 foot trailer near Elk River. She usually
heads south in the fall, but last year she was stuck here into
January for cancer treatment. The campground she stays in up here
closes in October (plumbing wasn't buried deep enough to survive the
frost). I could have easily set up her trailer in my driveway,
skirted and insulated it, and hooked it up with proper heat tapes and
all-but...

The city of Minneapolis in it's infernal wisdom will not let
me even park it in the driveway! Apparently the presence of a nice
clean little travel trailer complete with all of mom's cute little
decorations would desecrate our view of the neighborhood's junk cars
and burned out houses. So mom, unable to legally set up even
temporary residence in the Mill City, spent a month in a nursing home
at taxpayer expense.

So candidates- would you support allowing RV occupancy, with
proper hookups, say by annual permit, until our housing crisis eases?

Garage conversions- A couple years ago I added a small garage
to my Hawthorne homestead. It is now fully heated and insulated. It
would not be too difficult to add electric wiring, a bathroom, and a
kitchenette. The result would be a decent efficiency or one bedroom
apartment that would meet national code. Again, candidates, could you
support this modest proposal.

Amidst the vacant lots and boarded homes of Hawthorne,
                                                        Dyna Slyter
