First, thanks to Mekosh for letting us get a glimpse of how others see
us. That was priceless, and I'm grateful for your sharing that with us.
When I take my (usually) daily walks in my neighborhood I see many
wonderful and not-so-wonderful things. The dirty city thread has
focused on the not-so-wonderful side. Today, I saw the first northern
cardinal of the spring in Seward. No mating call yet, though, probably
still too cold. Any other sightings from you other Minneapolitans?
And how certain is that PR campaign for the "clean" city? Why couldn't
we also re-run the old commercials for anti-litter? I know I'm an
oldie, but since when don't people know better than to throw trash
and/or drop litter wherever they happen to be? Didn't their parents
teach them this is just plain unacceptable? Or maybe in other cultures
this is okay?
Whatever, it is NOT okay in our uptight, scandinavian-rooted city with
its orderly grid patterns and practically scrubbed downtown curbsides
(at least they were in the 1950's). Let the airwaves of TV and radio
stations be awash for a couple of years in anti litter public service
announcements, heck, I'd even support graffiti contests along these
lines (O, the irony of it all).
I may be having a bit of fun with this, but seriously, this goes to
showing respect for each other and keeping a clean city up to a
reasonable standard is important. So, bring on the spring clean up and
the education campaign and make everyone responsible for cleaning up
their own act.
