I'm only now getting around to report that last night
(wed( the state Senate passed out of the judiciary
committee a profiling bill that calls for mandatory
statewide data collection.
This was a major victoy led by Myron Orfield and Jane
Ranum with sens Cohen, Foley and Marty stepping up to
the plate as well. They were all dogged.
What is most important about the legislation was the
handful of African_americans who could make it to the
night session left feeling a little bit better about
the politics of this state. One person actually was
heard to say "this is an historic day for Minnesota."
I know I felt a bit prouder f our reps. I especially
was impressed by my own Sen Orfield but also Sen Foley
of Coon Rapids who I had buttonholed in the capitol
corridors last week when the bill was before the Crime
Prevention Comm.
Jane Ranum was possessed in her determination. She
moves around the captol faster than anyone I've seen.
You can't keep up with her. Sen Cohen asked questions
that had opponents falling over themselves.
But Orfield was the most eloquent and forceful in an
Aw Shucks way. We in Mpls can be proud of our Senators
including Linda Berglin. Greg Gray carried the ball in
the house which was an even harder task and was
deserted by four dems in committee.
There's a lot more work to be done before we have
something meaningful at the end of the session,
starting with a noontime rally tomorrow (Fri) at the
Capitol Rotunda. If you're not busy....
