This is what I heard from talking to friends in the area. Perhaps the
contributions came from bar owners. It's not illegal for individuals to
contribute. I doubt that the campaign contributions were illegal.
Regardless, there is videotape of the problems caused by the bars, taken by
very persistant people in the neighborhood. They brought this tape to the
police precinct in that area. The police initially were interested in
pursuing this more, and then got blocked from on high. The implication was
that this was political.
The problem ofcourse, is that if the area can't get it together, and find a
serious opponent for Biernat, they deserve the lack of city council
representation they have.
Worthy of note: Biernat didn't even ask to be screened for Stonewall DFL
Endorsement. There is a growing gay population in his ward. This would be
a fertile recruiting ground for the Republican Party. Urban Gays have and
will vote for Republican candidates.
