This was the title of a Linda Mack article from Feb 17, 1991 in the Strib. The sub headline was "a checklist of what makes a city great and how the twin cities measure up." It's worth a read. Near the end of the article under a heading "Have vision; make it happen" she makes this statement: "Minneapolis doesn't have a strong vision of self" Then she talks about a speech Don Fraser made entitled "the State of the Urban Environment", 'Minneapolis urban planning and design in the 1990's.' I have not had a chance to read the mayor's speech but i'll be curious to see how we've done in keeping up with his plan. Speaking of the work to be done, Linda Mack states, It will require a coordinated effort by political leaders, the downtown council, local architects, and groups such as CUE to shape a system that can shape Minneapolis." No mention of NRP. Nearly her last sentence states " Minneapolis's stronger economic condition has allowed the city to build bulk without beauty." I have the feeling we may not have progressed too much in downtown in the past decade. I'll read Mayor Fraser's speech tonight and will be interested in others ideas.
