Every year on National Night Out, our Block Club updates it's list of
neighbors which includes phone numbers and emails. Not all of the
houses have emails, but a lot do. All who put their names to the list
get a copy and several of us bother to put those emails into our
computers and use that list for such things as birth announcements,
moving (both comings and goings) and strange goings ons such as shots
fired, stolen bicycles, folks found peering into garage windows, or up
to mischief, ringing doorbells at odd hours, etc. Many a time those
emails have been responded to with gratitude.

At least on this very local scale, especially during the winter months
when we don't see each other over the back fence or walking by our front
porches as often, the email connection has helped us stay connected with
each other and, sadly, the unhappier goings on of our block, which is
better than nothing, and could someday turn out to be vital.

The example someone gave of the South's evacuation was a good one. If
only we could be sure it would never be sold or used for commercial or
fiendish purposes. Like fundraising.
