http://webserv0.startribune.com:80/stOnLine/cgi-bin/article?thisSlug=MOTE04 The interesting part of the "vote", as Tim Connolly pointed out, Basim Sabri brought in his tenants and packed the meeting. Normally, one would think a meeting that would have a vote would give the motel opposition some time to speak. There was time for questions, but there was no time where Motel opposition, some of whom had alternative ideas for the site, didn't get a chance to present in the same way Sabri and Kennedy had. Interesting tidbit: "The vote came during a two-hour meeting sponsored by a committee of the Central Neighborhood Improvement Association, the neighborhood group. The recommendation now will be taken up by the organization's board. City Council Member Brian Herron said he will hold a separate neighborhood meeting soon to ensure full discussion." I look forward to hearing from Council Member Herron regarding this meeting. This sounds like Herron has committed to organizing to put this meeting together. The way I interpretted Herron, is that he personally supports the Motel, but doesn't want to take political heat for it. Robert Lilligren has proposed some other ideas that really should be looked at. >From Tim Connolly's post: First off, it appeared that a clever politician who had the trust of a large segment of the community, many of whom were recent Latino and Somali immigrants, packed the meeting. That would be Basim Sabri. No problem. That's how the game is played and that I suspect is how the present leadership and board of CNIA came to be sitting at the front table. ------------------------------------------------ EY: This was Sabri the landlord bringing his tenants to the meeting. These folks didn't stay for the discussion. Nor was there any effort to translate the discussion into Spanish or Somali.
