I agree with Barbara on this Pledge of Allegiance flap. However, why do we
need a law? Evidently it isn't part of school district policy/protocol
throughout the state. What is the policy in MPS concerning the Pledge of
Allegiance?
After all the crying over education budget cuts and the need for more public
funds for education, you'd think all school districts would include the
Pledge of Allegiance as part of their student policy; maybe add some civics
lessons as well; how to petition your government, voting rights, personal
rights and responsibilities, etc. Just think of all the places in the world
where petitioning your government for more education spending isn't even an
option; where people get tossed in jail and prison and are tortured for
criticizing government actions or voicing public opinions or expressing
their thoughts. What's wrong with showing some respect and support for the
freedoms we enjoy and take for granted in this country? Things ain't
perfect, but it's all relative!
