My observation is that newspapers go though ups and downs in quality depending
on the editor-in-chief, I suppose. They also have strengths and weaknesses.
The PiPress had a dynomite union reporter for awhile, then he left and their
coverage dropped precipitously and has not recovered to date. When the Trib had
Molly Ivens and Mary Ziggenhagen (sp?) their commentary page was the highpoint
of the day. These days, Steve Brandt does a good job, so does Neil St. Anthony
(though, to me, business news is mostly boring). There are some others. With
the advent of "on-line" news, the papers have drifted to a new low. I don't
think either the PiPress or the Strib are really cooking these days.
