2. Commissioner McLaughlin receives award:
On April 17th the Center for Transportation Studies of the
University of Minnesota held their annual meeting and awards
luncheon. This year the Distinguished Public Leadership Award
was presented to Commissioner McLaughlin for "his leadership
role in helping to secure funding for the Hiawatha light rail
transit line." Minnesota Transportation Commissioner Elwyn
Tinklenberg presented Commissioner McLaughlin with his award,
praising his leadership with transportation within the
state. Commissioner McLaughlin, accepting the award,
stated, "I am thrilled that LRT is now becoming a reality.
It will serve as an integral part of the region's
transportation system, a system that must grow if
our economy is to prosper." Previous award winners include
State Senator Keith Langseth (1998), Congressmen Jim Oberstar
and Martin Sabo (1999), and State Senator Carol Flynn (2000).
