1.   Welcome!
          Welcome to the first of what I hope will be many updates to
          keep you more informed of events and happenings in Hennepin
          County.  If you ever have any comments or feedback, please
          feel free to hit the "reply button" and share them with me.

2.   Commissioner McLaughlin receives award:
          On April 17th the Center for Transportation Studies of the
          University of Minnesota held their annual meeting and awards
          luncheon.  This year the Distinguished Public Leadership Award
          was presented to Commissioner McLaughlin for "his leadership
          role in helping to secure funding for the Hiawatha light rail
          transit line."  Minnesota Transportation Commissioner Elwyn
          Tinklenberg presented Commissioner McLaughlin with his award,
          praising his leadership with transportation within the
          state.  Commissioner McLaughlin, accepting the award,
          stated, "I am thrilled that LRT is now becoming a reality.
          It will serve as an integral part of the region's
          transportation system, a system that must grow if
          our economy is to prosper."  Previous award winners include
          State Senator Keith Langseth (1998), Congressmen Jim Oberstar
          and Martin Sabo (1999), and State Senator Carol Flynn (2000).

3.   Arbor Day/Midtown Greenway Tree Planting

     Help us plant trees in the Midtown Greenway on Arbor Day, this
     Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.  Volunteer tree
     planters are invited to come to one of five designated planting
     areas.  We will get started at 9:00 am at Kick's field
     (Intersection of 5th Ave S and E 29th Street.  Walk North across
     the tracks and west at the Midway to 4th Ave).  For more
     information, call Tim Springer of the Midtown Greenway Coalition
     at 612-278-7171.

4.    New Bike Maps for Hennepin County

     I'm pleased to announce that a new bike map has been put out just
     in time for spring and summer biking around the county!  This
     comprehensive map has a detailed map of all known trails in the
     county, information about the Hennepin County Bicycle
     Transportation Plan, and lists Bicycle Related Contacts.  To
     receive a free copy of this map, you may contact our office at 612-

5.Veteran's Memorial Garden Dedication May 24th
     Come help us remember the Veteran's that have served in Hennepin
     County and dedicate the Veteran's Memorial Garden at the Armory in
     downtown Minneapolis on May 24th.  A brief ceremony will take
     place at 11:00 a.m.  The address of the armory is 500 South Sixth
     Street in Minneapolis.  For more information or directions, please
