A fair portion of the litter blowing down my street is fast food
wrappers, bags, and boxes. Much of that fast food litter carries the
Burger King label. I often see people walking back from the Burger King,
located on Lowry and Washington Avenue, carrying bags of Burger King
products. I suspect that these people are dropping the wrappers and
containers on the street when they are done with them. I have never seen
anyone actually drop those items, but I doubt that the wrappers are
blowing up from the freeway or over the freeway from Burger King.
Another source of litter are the school children coming home from
school. I see them get off the bus and immediately open up their
candybars and other food items and then drop the empty wrappers on to
the sidewalk. I talked to a small group once about it but they swore at
me and walked away all sullen.
Since Burger King can not control what its customers do with the food
wrappers and containers once they leave the premises, I do not think
that putting restrictions on fast food establishments will result in
much change. What I see as being needed is a behavior change in the
people that litter, that is, they have to stop littering. Possibly a
public education program might change the behaviors of some of the
litters. Hopefully, such a campaign would reach into homes via
television and into schools were children spend a large portion of their
time.
In the meantime, I will continue picking up the endless stream of litter
that blows down the street.
