Several of us have said that the appropriate question is not "How can we fund a new
stadium?" but "How can we keep the Twins here?". The answer that should be looked at
is public ownership of the team. Senator Ellen Anderson and I have had bills proposing
this several times. However recent actions should raise the additional question: Do
Minnesota fans deserve a baseball team? Items:
A few weeks ago when the Twins won a very exciting game in the last half of the
9th (by one run) , we were still treated to the parade of early leavers racing to beat
the non-existent traffic jams.
Attendance that depends on winning. Cubs fans (and the historic Brooklyn Dodger
fans) go (went) to games all the time.
Poor sportsmanship...IE yesterday's behavior and the booing of pitchers for
executing appropriate strategic plays like trying to pick the runner off first base.
An anecdote from my childhood: I was at a Cardinals-Dodgers game with my father when
Stan Musial, who was having a terrific day, got up to the plate. All got up for a
standing ovation. As a little kid, I was appalled at this disloyalty, but my father
gently explained that we always show our appreciation for outstanding quality. Where
are the Minnesota parents to give those lessons?

Phyllis Kahn, State Rep. 59B
