I agree with alot of what you say except the following:

" Why hasn't anyone proposed building a motel on the Uptown portion of
Hennepin Ave, or along the parkway? The reason: probably the perception
that the folks in Central have less influence and ability to control or
limit development that is considered undesirable elsewhere due to our
demographics."

Or - How about that there is no inexpensive land available for development
of a relatively large project in Uptown or along the Parkway? Consider for
a moment, that some in the area might want to actually use the facility. I
for one would welcome a hotel near my neighborhood - in the commercial
district. When we have lots of family come to town - it would be great. A
few years ago I lived in St. Louis Park, and when I was married, many of the
out of town guests stayed in the AmericaInn (or whatever it is called) on
Excelsior, and since I lived behind it, it was great. I have often had
occasion to need a hotel, and have had to have people stay downtown which is
expensive and hasn't worked out as well. I wouldn't consider a hotel on
Hennepin and Lake undesirable. And I never had a problem living for seven
years in a house behind the AmericaInn on Excelsior.

You state that the service is unecessary to the neighborhood. Is it possible
that ANY residents of the area would like to have some convenient
accomodations for guests that they can't house - or do you mean to say that
everyone in the area is too financially compromised to make use of a hotel
for legitimate reasons themselves? That may very well be, but assuming so
is just as patronising as assuming that the hotel would only be used by
hospital guests and prostitutes (in no particular order). I agree the $99
rate is high - I would balk at paying that too. And I agree that another
public subsidy is ridiculous. Can nothing be built in this town without
funding from the public trough? But I disagree with your tone that this is
an entirely undesireable "invasion" from the "AmeicanInn Imperialists"!
