Lynnell, you are in good company asking this question. Even John Williams,
the business agent for the Mpls. Building & Trades Council asked me the
same question. So not everybody knows the answer.

Per Lynnell's question I hate to bring up this old discussion but this list
about two to three months back hashed this out, chewed it up and spit it
back to the world. I think the response Lynnell is looking for needs to
come from Rick Stafford who has spearheaded this issue along with other
folks who are the experts on this topic - David Finke, Bert Black, Loki
Anderson and others.
It really dates back to several years back when Andy Dawkins and others
started a campaign for what is called "fusion" and were stomped on with a
court hearing that said "no way". I think Rick also has various DFL
documents and constiutional by-laws that can answer your question more
specifically.
And last, but not least, it appears that since The Green Party reached the
5% mark which entitles them to some state money via campaign finance reform
- the term major party is wherein lies the rub here.
Please be assured Lynnell that many, many people have asked the same
question and are just as confused as yourself. I don't agree with them (the
"pure" DFLer's) on all of this but so be it.

But I hate controversy and fighting and decided it was easiest to just play
by the rules that Mr. Stafford and his cohorts have set forth and follow my
heart. I am not actually quitting the DFL and know that 40 years of being
a Democrat doesn't just go away overnight - but for this election this year
this is what I have to do.
I have always found third party politics very intriguing and currently find
lots of excitement within the Greens.

I will be stopping by the convention on Saturday and I hope many of you
will consider this as you consider the endorsements on Saturday for Park
Board and as you figure out where you will place your arrows in this
non-partisan race when you vote in September and November.
I do want to continue representing you on the Park Board.
Thanks for asking,
