Jer rightly points out previous city-wide successes of the Stonewall DFL
Caucus. (and may I point out that we have also played a role in electing an
openly gay candidate to the St. Paul Paul School Board, Al Oertwig.)

There are other factors at play here:

1) We are seeing a lot qualified candidates emerging from the GLBT
community. All of the people mentioned on the list have tremendous talents
and expertise in areas that effect the whole community. Anyone around to
hear Patrick's speech on Saturday know how much thought and study he has put
into how Minneapolis can improve staff development for teachers and other.

2) Another part of the reason we are seeing so many wonderfully qualified
candidates who are also out of the closet is generational. We have the
coincidence of one of the most "out" generations ever arriving on the scene
as many politicians are retiring or moving on to other offices. Look at the
amount of turnover in the Minneapolis Legislative contingent over the past
three years.
