Mpls-Issues tip: please delete as much of this message's text as possible if replying to the list. Thanks! ----------- I couple days ago I posted a note saying the mayor had just been discharged from the hospital with pneumonia prior to the convention. This isn't true. It was Charlotte Anderson, the library board member, who had just gotten out of the hospital. I apologize for not checking the facts before I misinformed a gazillion people on this list. I was disappointed, like many others, that the mayor did not receive the DFL endorsement at the convention. That said, I think the mayor will prevail in the primary. Despite many delegates dissatisfaction with parts of her record, overall it's a very strong one. Yes, she has two terms worth of baggage, but she's the only candidate that talks about PEOPLE in our community--kids in school, parents who need jobs close to home, teens who need summer recreation options. The mayor strikes me as a person who sees the people behind these issues of affordable housing, jobs, and schools. Maybe the downtown could be more visually interesting, but 75,000 people DO work there and another 24,000 live, making it one of the most vital city centers in the nation and the source of over 40% of the city's tax revenues. Maybe the infrastructure and maintenance could be more fully funded, but believe me, I'd rather see the gyms this summer filled with kids and Way to Grow expanded to every school. I'd rather see mayoral energies expended on the industry cluster idea so people could have a chance a good job and a stable home. Worth a few pot holes perhaps? "Quality of life" issues? A couple years ago I was afraid to walk through my neighborhood at night. That fear has totally disappeared. It's all about how we choose to spend our money in the end. The mayor does a lot with the city's limited budget. And she does it with the city's PEOPLE in mind.
