Mark Steinglein is running as an Independent -- not a Republican. The
Mayor's race is also a non-partisan race. It seems that many Republicans
in the city are supporting either Steinglein or Lisa McDonald.
Shirley Carlson has gotten LCR/MN's questionaire. As far as the process:
in the past, LCR/MN has screened by using a questionaire -- by email. We
looked at the answers to the questionaire, and looked at records (in the
case of incumbents) to decide on whether to endorse or not. Endorsement
decisions are made at LCR/MN meetings. Most of the legislative candidates
we screened last year also stopped by our meetings. LCR/MN certainly
didn't endorse everyone who applied for endorsement. The criteria was
based on whether the candidate was going to be supportive of GLBT issues.
Support for the sodomy law would screen them out. So also would
willingness to support getting rid of the Human Rights Act as it applies to
gays.
Personally, I'd like to see an adhoc group of Gays -- from different
political affiliations, screen mayoral and city council races. Most Gay
issues are not really partisan political issues.
The Mayor's Race is covered in this issue of Insight. CNIA's latest woes
-- regarding Zack Metoyer's disclaimer ($110,000 is missing and it must
have been that evil previous ED and board) are also covered.
