You gotta love Lou Gelfand and the issues this whole
thing raises.

R.T. once mentioned to me when I was talking about
something I was writing about the Ryan development
near the new Guthrie and hoped to get into the Strib
that I should talk to him as he still had friends and
contacts there. Do tell.

It's hard to understand the whole Gelfand article. If
he (lou) agrees with R.T. the oversight is corrected.
Rarely does Mr. Gelfand give a whole collumn to one
topic.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Whining gets you places
is the moral to this story. The question remains, who
whines loudest and best. Most of the candidates have
staff who disseminate info and beg for their voice to
be heard. Inthis case R.T. (Raymond Thomas), thank you
Lou, won.

The thing that really bothers me about the whole issue
is this. THE PHOTO!

Up until the past week the Strib had used the photo of
R.T. that appeared in Lou's Column on Sunday. After
the election they used a photo of R.T. that I suspect
was snapped at the DFL convention. It was in the Strib
again today. Why did Lou or the editors feel compelled
to reach back into the grab bag for R.T.'s personal
campaign head shot?

This takes me . If you remember there were seven or
eight candidates running including Steve Novak. The
Strib ran a string of stock photos of the candidates
that led me to name them the dour farmer laborites.
The next time they ran that sring of photos Steve
Novak, ALONE, sported a smile.

It seems R.T. pulled off the same coup with Lou or
maybe it was a Strib decision. Whichever way, it seems
might manipulative to me which is what make me, and I
suspect so many regular people, comtemptuous of in the
political arena.

They say "a picture is worth a thousand words."

R.T.'s personal campaign generated head shot says to
me in a very marketing savvy shallow way, "here is a
handsome young wholesome man of vision." It seems all
too manufactured image making to me. It's too bad.

Contrast that with the photo of SSB in the Pioneer
Press today. Yes, it was staged, posed if you will,
but this is a face that knows life. It speaks of real
character to me. I liked it and i liked the article.

I like the Mayor. I don't want to see her in City Hall
for another term but the Mayor understands nuance and
complexity and knows all is not just black or white.

I don't know what my point is. just a little idle
reflection.
