With all due respect to Sheldon Mains, the first hydroelectric plant in
the western hemisphere was in Paterson, New Jersey. The city was founded
by Alexander Hamilton who formed the Society for Useful
Manufacturing. This was before Hamilton tripped in the city of
Weehawken. The Passaic Falls shows up prominently in several episodeds of
the "Sopronos."
