Finally, some discussion regarding the Minneapolis Public Schools. As
many people know I am a strong supporter of the MPS. I worked extremely
hard to pass the Small Class Size referendum last year. I am also one
of those "white middle class" parents who have chosen to send my two
children to public schools. My dad was a public school teacher for over
30 years and I have tremendous respect for the folks who dedicate their
lives to teaching kids.
Wow, I find it somewhat sad that someone said that diversity is
overrated! I love the fact that my kids can be friends with lots of
people who may not look or have backgrounds similar to theirs. I think
it only makes them better people and better citizens. It also makes our
life so much more interesting.
I'm blessed to have very bright children. I am so pleased with the
progress they are making in MPS. I think because MPS has kids at so
many different levels, they are very attuned to creating individualized
learning plans. I know part of their success is the fact that my
husband and I get involved with their education, are active in the
school and make sure our family participates in a variety of educational
activities outside the school day. Sure, they would probably do well
where ever they went to school, but I truly believe they will receive a
much richer education in MPS.
If you are concerned about the future of MPS, look to what the
Legislature do over the next few days. Unfortunately, the district puts
its budget together before they know what the state will provide. The
district has to make plans for the next school year. Why can't the
Legislature get their work done on time? Preparing for the worst case
scenario, many schools are just realizing the impact the lack of state
funds will have on their school. The biggest hit is being taken at the
district administrative level. If you want to get angry, talk to the
Governor or your legislator.
