The obvious additions to the list of why it is important for the Mayor to be
involved with the Minneapolis public schools is that he or she is a policy
leader for the whole City. Although the Mayor doesn't have a seat on the
School Board, he or she can be very influential. Three important examples
from the past include the passage of the original School referendum, the
move to community schools, and the construction of neighborhood learning
centers, things that wouldn't have occurred without the strong leadership of
the Mayor at the time.
