A couple of days, Mr. Gordon, who is running for the City Council, posted
his goal of having an energy policy for the City which stressed
conservation. I do believe that the points he brought up are laudable
goals. What was missing from his post, however, was how to pay for the
things he would like to achieve, things like city-owned power producing
facilities, grants and loans to homeowners for energy improvements, and
subsidization of things like retrofitting solar panels onto residential
buildings.
This reminds me of a Peanuts cartoon where Snoopy and Woodstock are
talking. Woodstock says (with Snoopy translating) "The government should by
raincoats for all the birds so they wouldn't get wet when it rains." Snoopy
replies, "How are you going to pay for it?" Woodstock replies "Everytime
someone comes up with a good idea, someone else brings up the budget." So,
I'm going to bring up the budget. Can Mr. Gorden or anyone from the Green
Party speak to how such programs would be financed?
