Carol Becker raised some good questions about my energy policy positions. I will
respond more later and I apologize for the delay.
For now, let me say that I do not pretend to have all the funding sources
identified for each proposal. I want my campaign, and, if elected, my work as
city council member, to be marked by real public discourse about the issues that
concner us. I hope the ideas I presented can be part of that and as we work to
move to a better energy policy for Minneapolis I want Carol and all of us to be
part of that meaningful discourse.
The energy ideas I am talking offer the potential to help us start moving in the
right direction with little funding or to be good investments for future funds
should they become available or should a suitable funding source be identified.
My point in raising these ideas now is to help build community supporet so that
when budget considerations come up in the future they can be considered more
seriously and funded better.
I do have some more specific ideas to share on funding, however, and on how
current programs might be used, but still the budget must be dealt with as a
whole and all priorities must be taken into consideration. Among those
priorities ought to be the ones I presented for better conservation, supporting
renewable energy and working towards a community-owned and
democratically-managed power utility serving residents of Minneapolis. These are
some of the things I will work to fund when helping craft future budgets for our
city in the future.
