Nellie Stone Johnson was a union and political organizer here in Minnesota.  According to the MN Labor Interpretive Center website, she was first black elected official to hold a city-wide office (Mpls Library Board).  The website is:

"Nellie Stone Johnson:  The Life of an Activist" was indeed written by the list's own David Brauer.  The book is published by Ruminator Books on Grand Ave in St Paul.
