This is going to be one of the most challenging issues the Minneapolis
Public Library will face. I have real concerns about organizations such as
the FRC advising libraries on filters. The FRC and their Minnesota
Affiliate the Minnesota Family Council are anti-gay organizations. Will
STD prevention material, or material about Gays and Lesbians be filtered
out on the basis of being "obscene"? Would political sites such as the
Free Republic get filtered out.
It seems that many of the guidelines for use of the computers in the
Minneapolis Public Libraries should have taken care of the problems the
librarians are reporting. How well have these policies worked?
Also, I'm surprised that the librarian who brought this case didn't think
of pressing charges against the patrons she saw masturbating in the
library. That behavior is already illegal -- and it seems relatively
straightforward to report those folks to the police, and have them arrested.
