i agree with david that riding along major trunk lines is not the best,
they're noisy, distracting, and harrowing.    i also ride through
neighborhoods because they are more aesthetically pleasing and more user
friendly.   not to mention i could probably navigate my way from one end of
mpls to the other through the alleys.  but at some point, if i'm not riding
for pure recreation, i will have to intersect with, and ride along, on the
major through-ways.  sometimes they are the most logical, direct and
convenient route from point a to point b.  therefore, i still maintain lanes
should exist for cyclists.

as for the midtown greenway, i know many women who refuse to use it because
of the perceived danger ----being down in the trench and cut off from escape
routes.  for this reason, i don't consider the greenway a viable crosstown
route for a significant segment of people, especially at night.
