Beth's post linking to the Punk Rock Nursing site may have left a
misimpression. Beth found the link on her own, then was considerate enough
to ask me offlist whether linking to the site would violate list rules.
This was a tough call. There are profanities and personal attacks directed
at Council Member McDonald. The list rules prohibit personal attacks and
inflamed language ON the list. But what if a post links to ANOTHER site with
personal attacks and inflamed language? (We already have two cases of this,
sort of, with links to the White Power mayoral candidate, and
Minneapolis-Rules, which allows all manner of personal attacks.)
I didn't think Beth's intent was to defame council member McDonald through
the back door, but rather to tell members to about an interesting, even
compelling debate elsewhere online (irrespective of the language and
characterizations).
My split-the-baby decision was that it was ok to post the link, but give
members a choice about whether to indulge in the "rawness." To fully inform
members, I asked that she add a disclaimer about the facets that would
violate our list rules if those messages were here. (She added her own
disclaimer about her support, or lack thereof, for the charges.)
My hope is that the information and perspectives offered at Punk Rock
Nursing, irrespective of the language, are appropriate for list members to
learn of through Minneapolis-Issues. Of course, I ask that if members debate
the substance of those posts here, but not adopt the profanity and personal
rips.
These list-manager calls are often tough - this one certainly was. I hope
people respect my motives (and no, this wasn't motivated by any feeling
about candidate McDonald. I would have tried to make the same call no matter
who this discussion had been about.
I am interested in your feedback. There are three places you can send it: to
me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or to the Minneapolis Rules forum at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mpls-rules (I'm no longer a member of that
forum - it's personal and am happy to explain offlist -- but good ideas from
there get back to me). Also you can email my board chair, Steve Clift at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Please don't email the list. I did think all members deserved an onlist
explanation, however.
Best,
David Brauer

Subject: [Mpls] raw feedback
fellow list members:
i was forwarded the following link. our esteemed list moderator and myself
found the content interesting, if raw. it's a bit of a sociological study
of what others in our community are saying about the mayoral race,
neighborhood development, corporate subsidies, affordable housing and the
like. rather a parallel universe to our own list postings. i am not saying
i agree with any or all of the content, i merely find it compelling to see
what people on the outside of active political participation are thinking
and writing. some may be offended by potty-mouth words or nasty remarks
about cm mcdonald.
